JOHN MUNGIELLO
We are born into a particular place by chance alone. Consequently, we inherit its history, ideology, language, culture, values, etc. Everything that constructs our identities is already set up. We have no choice but to adhere and live according to it. A lemon can only be a lemon because you are told it is. I never had a choice to call it something else. In my work, I am focusing on how “taste” is imposed onto us in the arts. Manet (who was hated in his time), is Manet because collectors with the help of art historians turned him into a brand, the “father of modern art”.
